I chose this picture because I thought it was funny. Hamlet seems like he’s such a dramatic person and this cartoon kind of shows that. The copywrite kind of covers some of what he is supposed to be saying but maybe you can make it out.

I chose this picture also to represent Hamlet because it is something I would imagine would be used to maybe advertise for the play. Hamlet with a sad face and a skull in his hand. It’s just what I picture and it’s more serious than the last one.

I found a website that listed some of the superstitions about ghost and witches, black cats and graves(http://www.texasescapes.com/AllThingsHistorical/SuperstitionsBB1003.htm). If you’re walking in the dark carry some bread with you to offer the ghost if you meet one. Walk around a ghost nine times to make it disappear or crow and it will think it’s almost day time and leave. When passing a grave yard or a house someone has died in turn your pockets inside out so you can make sure you don’t carry home a ghost with you! I think alot of people like to ghost hunt or just go to haunted houses because of the adrenaline rush it can give them. I can only handle scary movies though. I can’t take too much. I looked up a web site with a huge list of places in Georgia that could be haunted(http://theshadowlands.net/places/georgia.htm). My family doesn’t have superstitions about ghost. I had heard one time that the Wizard of Oz was an allegory for the Great Depression. I think the straw man represented the farmers in the country at that time. Emerald City was very gaudy and rich. It probably represented what people wanted at that time. They wanted an abundance of everything and just a place that was very happy and had plenty of what they needed, since at that time they were really living in a place that was the complete opposite of that. The two witches probably stood for all the different things that were good and bad during that time. I remember some one saying that the wizard of oz being fake and not a real wizard represented some people’s resentment towards God during that time. They felt God had abandoned them during their time of hardship. Now that I think about it, the wizard of oz could have also been used to show how the people had put their trust in the government and the government let them down. Either way, I’m not sure which one.

What I found about how the media effects self-image was mostly related to women. A lot of websites talked about how the media portrays women as being quiet, super thin, beautiful and flawless skin. That is what everyone sees everyday. Men are showed pictures of women with the “perfect” body and one website I visited(http://www.uoguelph.ca/~mbateson/women.html) said after being shown picture of playboy models, men found their girlfriends less attractive. Not all media is bad though. There are some people that try to let people know that you can look beautiful just the way you are and you don’t have to be stick thin to be attractive to other people. I know one time on America’s Next Top Model a “plus” size model won the competition.

Thomas More was born on February 7, 1478. He was an English lawyer, an author and a statesman. He gained a reputation as a leading humanist scholar. More was also Lord Chancellor and burned people at the stake for heresy. More coined the term “utopia”. On July 6, 1535 he was beheaded when he refused to sign the Act of Supremacy which said the Henry VIII was the head of the church in England.

I’m having a really hard time thinking of someone today that you could call a renaissance man. No one is coming to mind but as far as people being able to excel in a variety of things you could include some of today’s stars. I know thats probably not exactly what is meant by the term “renaissance man” but it kind of fits. Some big stars sing, act, write, have there own clothing line, there own perfume. They do everything they can think of to be able to promote themselves and get more money. I know thats not exactly right but it’s the closest thing I can think of right now.

In most of Pride and Prejudice I think what motivates the characters is there concern for money. The girls mother based alot of her emotions and decisions on whether or not she would get more money out of it. I don’t think her daughters were quite as worried about it as she was and definitely not their father. Jane and Lizzy were with certain people because they really thought they liked them and in Jane’s case she liked someone who happened to have alot of money. I didn’t get a chance to see the end so I don’t know if Lizzy started to like someone who had alot of money too. Life in the 19thcentury seemed to be based on your class and how much money you had. It determined who you talked to and you called on you. I think money is still and issue today with people but not as extreme as it was in the 19th century. Some people today just want to make sure they will have alot of money so they can do whatever they want!

Do I Like Blogging?

I don’t know how I’m going to feel about blogging. Right now I don’t know that I will have time to blog with a job, school, and band. I’ve never used a bolg for a class assignment before either so I don’t really know what I’m doing. I think I’m looking forward to blogging but I’m not really sure yet but I think its more fun than writing papers so I guess we’ll see!
